Dragon Arts and Learning Centre
Social Inclusion Through Arts and Learning
European Social Fund Logo

Supported by the Welsh European Funding Office

The Dragon Arts Centre provides free arts and training classes and opportunities to anyone who has experienced homelessness or social exclusion and who may have difficulty accessing mainstream education. We do this through a wide range of activities and events both on and off-site.

Dragon Arts Centre Building

The informal welcoming atmosphere of our centre encourages people to take part in arts and learning activities at a time and pace that suits them.

Workshops are tailored to the skill levels of the participants. Members can work towards qualifications at their own pace in a creative and welcoming environment. Not only can they try as many or as few courses as they wish, they are also able to participate in the planning and development of the project as a whole.

Photographic Group OutsideA casual interest in one activity often leads to a committed involvement in several. Dragon Arts is an approved provider of National Open College Network modules, a fact that has enabled many members to gain the first accredited qualifications of their lives. Members have regular opportunities to see their work on public display in city galleries.

Cyrenians Community Resource Centre

European Social Fund Logo

Supported by the Welsh European Funding Office

The Cyrenians Community Centre is an award-winning project that offers health support, subsidised food, advice and training to disadvantaged people by day, and a venue for community groups in the evenings.

Inside the centreFunded by the European Social Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund, primary health care is provided through a partnership between the Cyrenians and the Swansea Local Health Board.  A specialist nurse is on site every morning, and the centre is linked to a local GPs practice through an enhanced service.

Subsidised healthy food is available each weekday at the Owl and Parrot café, and a range of activities and training is on offer.  The thriving Nine Carrots food cooperative operates from the centre each week.

The centre has already established itself as a key resource for Swansea, with its emphasis on healthy living and community involvement. The long-term health benefits to a section of the community that hasn’t always been able to access mainstream services will be profound.

The centre web site is now live. You can also contact the centre through the following means.

Cyrenians Community Resource Centre

Resettlement and Recycling

Every year thousands of pieces of perfectly good furniture end up being needlessly thrown away. RESaREC (Resettlement and Recycling) aims to put it to good use. The scheme collects donated furniture from the local community, restores it where necessary in its workshop, and passes it on to people who are homeless or on very low income to help them set up home. It is a simple idea that works well by helping hundreds of people, involving the local community and benefiting the environment.

ResaRec buildingSupported by the Local Regeneration Fund and the Community Fund , RESaREC also offers training in furniture restoration and courses for volunteers.

RESaREC is currently developing training schemes for volunteers; these are held in the wood workshop, where trainees learn how to create funky furniture out of old scrapped items.

Cyrenians Community Resource Centre

The Tenancy Support team works in partnership with the local authority to assist tenants in maintaining their own tenancies. The team supports both younger and older people with a wide variety of support needs.

Young People

Many of our younger clients are housed by the City and County of Swansea under the Supporting People initiative. They can expect support to make a success of their tenancies and also help to set up training/education opportunities, and social, sports and cultural activities. There is now a drop in service at the Cyrenians Community Resource Centre.

A number also stay at our Paxton Street Hostel

Older People

In addition to supporting older council tenants who are referred to the service, we also run a supported living project for older people who have suffered homelessness. Also see the section on Ty Betty Williams.
