40 years tackling homelessness & poverty

For four decades Cyrenians Cymru have worked to tackle entrenched poverty and deprivation in South West Wales.

We now offer a wide range of services to homeless and disadvantaged adults as can be seen below.

Our ethos is simple. We exist to help people afflicted by poverty to improve their lives and achieve brighter futures.

Tenancy Support

Supporting Peopls The tenancy support team help over 30 vulnerable adults in Swansea maintain their tenancies.

Specialist support is offered in budgeting, problem resolution, debt advice, welfare benefits, access to training and employment, and community integration.

The project is run in partnership with the City and County of Swansea.

There are three projects supporting older people; Ty Betty Williams, St. Matthew’s Court flats and Sir John Morris House.

Temporary Accommodation

Our Temporary Hostel Paxton St. Hostel is the longest-running Cyrenians project. This direct access hostel is located in the centre of Swansea and offers 13 single rooms for homeless men and women.

Every resident is offered a key worker and support planning towards effective resettlement. The aim is to provide a sympathetic, welcoming, non-judgemental environment for people who are experiencing desperate times in their lives, with practical support to help them move forwards.

The hostel is staffed 24 hours per day, and is run in partnership with Family Housing Association (Wales).

Transnational Initiatives

In recent years, Cyrenians Cymru has become involved in European partnerships through the Gundtvig Lifelong Learning programme "(www.grundtvig.org.uk). Our ‘European Fire Celebrations’ project, in partnership with Denmark, Spain, Czech Republic and Turkey, was selected as a good practice case study for the Europe-wide Inclusion project

Turkey Celebrations It gave disadvantaged adult learners the chance to visit partner countries to experience their cultures and become involved in creative workshops around the theme of fire celebrations.

With the support of the Welsh European Funding Office and the Wales Consulate to Romania, we have been exploring links with Romanian NGOs who are working to tackle poverty, with a view to possible partnerships in project development in the future.

Environment

Boathouse on the Gower The Cyrenians makes a positive contribution to the environment through promoting recycling in all the projects, participating in the Cycle-to-Work scheme for staff, and using FairTrade products where possible.

The Resarec re-use and recycling scheme, through collection, repair and distribution of furniture donations, has diverted many tonnes from landfill over the years.

The glass workshop takes recycled glass and trains people to make craft products including bowls, jewellery and decorative items which can then be bought from Celfi retail training centre.

Swansea borders the UK’s first Area of Outstanding National Beauty (AONB); the Gower Peninsular. In recent years we have made efforts to help our service-users enjoy this coastal landscape. With the generous support of the Steel Supply Company Ltd. we have been able to rent the Boat House at Rhossili as an outreach base for bird-watching, fishing, photography and arts work.

Community

Community Activities on our International Day The Cyrenians continues to strengthen its links with minority groups across southwest Wales. Members of the Kurdish, Eritrean and Sudanese communities regularly meet at our Community centre in High St., Swansea.

Once a year, we hold an International Day at the centre, as a celebration of cultural traditions and friendship. In response to demand, we have also established weekly ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes.

The Cyrenians Cymru Unity in Diversity Group for local refugees and asylum seekers provide food, friendship and English language classes twice weekly, every week with occasional special events such as Naw Ruz.

Health

Community Activities on our International Day We are now into the fifth year of a ground-breaking partnership with Abertawe Bro Morgannwg Health Authority (formerly Iechydd Morgannwg HA) to deliver health support at the Cyrenians Community Centre to homeless people and others who find it difficult to access mainstream services.

This unique partnership links the Swansea High St. practice to the centre, providing a specialist homelessness nurse and support from two GPs. In 2010, Janet Keauffling the Homeless Nurse was awarded the Queen’s Award for Nursing, and in the same year the Swansea High St. Practice were winners of the Royal College of General Practitioners, Wales Practice Administration Team of the Year Award...
