The award winning cyrenians community centre is a unique project which has received
plaudits from all over the UK for its ground breaking approach to tackling
health and lifestyle barriers to training and employment. It has been considered
a beacon project by the Welsh European Funding Office and the Heritage
Lottery Fund, both of whom provide financial support. It has also attracted
frequent attention from politicians and decision-makers as a model for
regeneration of landmark buildings for community use.
Some 650 day-time members have signed up since opening, benefiting from the healthy café, receiving medical support and sign-posting to services, participating in activities such as yoga, get cooking classes and IT training, and generating initiatives like the 9 Carrots Food Co-operative.
The medical unit at the community centre provides access to health
care for vulnerable individuals. It is all too common for people who
are homeless not to be registered with a GP and therefore leave
potentially harmful medical conditions unchecked.
The community centre offers access to a doctor, a nurse and a podiatrist and can advise individuals on general health, nutrition and if required, refer on to specialist care.
