Sailing Courses

There are a number of Sailing courses coming up in August.

The first date, the 6th august is for beginners, to give those who have not had a chance to sail before a go, and will be staffed by John Butler (please note that this date clashes with the instructor training programme, so please don't sign people up for both).

The second date, the 20th August is for those who have tried sailing before, to give them a chance to further develop their skills.

There are six place only for each day. Those who get their consent forms, disclaimers and deposits in first will be given the places. If a service user books a place and doesn't show, without good reason, they will forfeit the opportunity to come on the next sailing course.

Please find below the documents you need to apply or these courses.

Getting our hands really dirty

ESDGC
Staff Training Course with Down to Earth Project.

Staff in the Teepee.Three members of staff attended a staff training course to obtain an OCN in Educational Sustainable Development and Global Sustainability at the Down to Earth Project in Bishopston Valley. These were Julie and Fay from tenancy support and Lois the activities coordinator.
They enjoyed participating in practical workshops such as cob building, earth oven building, using the woodland as a teaching environment and cooking outdoors.
They also attended informative workshops on identifying and linking global issues, and how these can be brought to the attention of service users through work activities.
The course was very enjoyable, interesting and you should see new ESDGC activities on the Cyrenians programme soon!

Following completion of the 3 week training course, 6 participants will have the chance to continue on to a 2-3month intensive training programme to gain outdoor qualifications in Kayaking, Canoeing, Climbing, Hill Walking, Sailing and Power Boating.

At the foot of the cliff

Looking up the rockfaceThe Cyrenians outdoor training course went climbing and abseiling at devil’s Truc, Mewslade, south Gower. Ben, Dave, John and Jules enjoyed developing their climbing and abseiling skills with the help of Ceri from Swansea Watersports and Lois from the Cyrenians.

On the rock faceThey all braved the wet weather forecasts and were rewarded with a dry day’s climbing.

5th and 6th August 2008
Beans round a campfire - oh hang on ....The Cyrenians outdoor training course planned and undertook a hill walking trip from Pont-Nedd-Fechan to their campsite near Porth-yr-Ogof in the neath valley. In the wilds of the Neath ValleyThey passed many waterfalls along the way, and made a fantastic Spaghetti Bolognaise and fried breakfast ( despite the campsite dog stealing their sausages!)

Those who took part were Ben, Dave, Cori, Ceri, John, Carys and Lois.

Congratulations

On Friday 29th of August 2008 Phillip Hall, completed his competent crew yachting qualification

Beach Olympics awards

The Cyrenians Annual Beach Olympics took place on the 2nd July 2008.

The weather managed to hold out for the two hour fun event, and teams from Wallich Clifford, Syshp, Dragon Arts, Tenancy support and St.Matthew’s community centre took part.

Participants (staff and service users alike) showed great team spirit by participating in events such as a fancy dress assault course, gutter run challenge, space hopper time trials, welly wanging and tug of war.

It was a close call, but Dragon arts took the trophy for this year, and reign champions of the Cyrenians Beach Olympics 2008!

Cyrenians would like to thank all staff and participants in the event and also would like to thank Swansea market engraving service for providing the trophy and Leisure Quest, Vue Cinema, The Leisure Centre and RokSport for donating prizes for the event.

We hope to see you all again next year for another CYRENIANS BEACH OLYMPICS!!!
